Practical Blacksmith Fundamentals: Tongs & Bottle openers. Forging a set of tongs and a bottle opener in this one day class.
Forging isn’t just getting things hot and hitting steel. It’s a mindset that revolves around having a plan, materials, while using technique and efficiency to express your ideas from your mind to the Anvil. “Striking while the iron’s hot” is about taking advantage of the short window of opportunity where the steel is pliable under the hammer, embracing discipline and making bold decisions in between heats of the forge.
This is what being a blacksmith is: being organized with your tools, techniques and your mind.
In this one day workshop we will hand forge a pair of simple tongs. Tongs are my favorite things to forge as a fundamental project. We will be using an array of techniques that are integral to forging: incising, isolating mass, drawing out the reigns, controlling hits, hot punching and drifting holes, twisting and riveting. And a pair of tongs means you’ll be working on keeping both parts even and the same. This is an extremely important exercise in consistency. When we’re done with the tongs we’ll use the tongs we made to forge out a bottle opener.
It will be a fast paced 1 day class with a lot of information that will be easy to understand, and it will be rewarding for all skill levels.Book Class Now
